ProxiWood sourcing

ProxiWood sourcing

A key element in our strategy, the ProxiWood approach to raw material sourcing means that effectively all wood is procured from the areas in close proximity to the mill.

This approach is both cost-effective and environmentally responsive. Shorter hauling distances (generally within a 100 km radius of the mill) mean lower emissions and traffic loads.

Annual harvesting in Kainuu has long fallen far below the annual growth rate of 6.9 million m3, which opens up for considerably increased use of fibre wood in a sustainable way.

ProxiWood also means a comprehensive commitment to the regional wood economy. About 15 pct of harvested wood will be birch, and the mill will therefore produce the equivalent amount of hardwood (short-fibre) pulp – about 100 000 ADMT/a.

Wood will be sourced from trusted suppliers, and harvested from sustainably managed local forests. Over 90 pct of the region’s forests are certified.

Most pulp wood used will come from thinnings, an essential element in sustainable forest management. Additional wood will come in chip form from regional sawmills.

Our wood procurement process itself will be certified and thus subject to third party auditing.
