A key element in our strategy, the ProxiWood approach to raw material sourcing means that wood is procured mostly from sources in close proximity to the mill.
ProxiWood wood sourcing is an important part of our responsibility. By predominantly drawing from the nearby forests of the Kainuu region, average haulage is kept around 100 km; less than half the distance other pulp mills must transport wood from Kainuu. The closer the wood source, the lower the CO2 emissions and other environmental loads from traffic.
The mill will improve the profitability of the region’s sawmills by reducing the distance they need to transport the wood chips their processes generate. Chips from sawmills are excellent raw material for pulp.
Thanks to long-term forestry management, Kainuu enjoys substantial sustainable forest growth, and offers a steady flow of fibre wood from thinnings. The region also benefits from the accumulated harvest deficits from sub-growth cutting over many years.
ProxiWood also means a comprehensive commitment to the regional wood economy. About 15% of harvested wood will be birch, and the mill will therefore produce the equivalent amount of hardwood (short-fibre) pulp – about 100 000 ADMT/a, thereby ensuring that the birch is locally utilised.
Wood will be sourced from trusted suppliers, and harvested from sustainably managed local forests. Over 90 pct of the region’s forests are certified. Most pulp wood used will come from thinnings, an essential element in sustainable forest management. Additional wood may come as chips from regional sawmills.
Our wood procurement process will be certified and thus open to third party auditing.
